This past Saturday, a few of my Dallas BBG girls and I went to the NTC (Nike Training Club) workout at the courtyard at Northpark Center. To say we had a good time is an understatement!!! The weather was beautiful and the workout was tough but in a fun “it-flew-by-so-fast!” kind of way. It was great to meet the NTC Dallas staff and sweat it out alongside of them! We ran together, we shuffle-stepped together; we did push-ups, we did planks, we did lunges, we did squats, we did burpees – it seemed like we did it ALL in that 45 minute time frame. After feeling all the positive vibes and almost instantaneous friendships at this NTC get-together (which seemed all very similar to our BBG community) – I decided I needed to know more about NTC and what it was all about. So after our class, I reached out to our instructor, Brandace Laska (@bboldbstrong), to see if she would like to tell us a little more about NTC Dallas. Here’s my mini-interview with Brandace:
What is your position with NTC?
I’m a NTC Trainer and Brand Ambassador.
What is your background in fitness and how did you first become involved with NTC?
I am a National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) Certified Personal Trainer, NASM Corrective Exercise Specialist, NASM Weight Loss Specialist, NASM Flexibility Specialist, and an Original Strength Practitioner. I first became involved in NTC when it was launched in Dallas about 4-5 years ago when I was running boot camps and other classes at 24 Hour Fitness. NTC was so new that I honestly didn’t even know what it was when I went to my first training but I was over the moon to work with Nike!
What is your favorite thing about leading the NTC group workouts?
I love seeing positive changes in members. These changes occur in many ways – weight loss, making new friends, re-discovering a love for fitness, or even finding the athlete who lives within.
How do you come up with a new workout every week?
I’m often inspired by the Fitness Diaries on the NTC app. These are the featured workouts and are created by Nike Master Trainers and Nike Athletes. I like to change the theme of our workouts every time we meet so I usually pick out a few drills that I think will work well with the group and go from there.
What is your favorite thing about leading the NTC group workout classes?
NTC makes fitness accessible to anyone! Whether it’s through the app or at a NTC Live Event, anyone can have access to workouts designed by world class Trainers and Athletes at no cost. I am thrilled to be a part of others’ fitness journies and leading NTC allows me to do so on a grander scale.
What is your favorite motivational quote?
“You don’t have to be great to start but you have to start to be great.” -Zig Ziglar
What is one of your secrets in keeping the group motivated throughout the entire fitness class?
I try my best to make the workout fun! Mixing in partner work or telling a joke or two is the least I can do to create a fun environment for participants.
What’s your favorite part about working for/being associated with an amazing brand like Nike?
Nike is all about sport. They live and breathe to support the modern athlete. I feel very blessed to represent such an elite brand.
Tell us something we probably do not know about NTC.
NTC is taught worldwide at Nike stores, fitness studios, and universities. BUT – NTC Dallas is the only regular NTC Live class that is outdoors on grass. This gives us a unique experience. We are also one of the few that actually has hand weights (go Nike Dallas!).
Have you seen a change in the fitness movement over your career?
I have. Among other changes I’ve noticed a big shift in group classes. It used to be that many boot camps were “hard core” where the instructor motivated with a lot of yelling and pushing. Now there is a shift into more fun group workouts where all can feel accepted. I’m a big fan of this change!
